EU project PRACTICE successfully pilots secure survey system to provide true anonymityOctober 2016
EU-funded research project PRACTICE, launched in 2013, successfully piloted a secure survey system devised in collaboration with scientists from Cybernetica, Alexandra Institute and Partisia, that allows for true anonymity, thus enabling better policy-making that adapts to the needs of the community.
The pilot was carried out within the internal reviewing process of a local government, and received recognition from the Mayor of Tartu, the second largest city in Estonia, where the pilot was executed.
"We aimed for more than just creating a secure platform," says Dr. Dan Bogdanov, project manager from Cybernetica. "We often see that "honest" opinions are swayed by a subconscious fear of repercussions, which obviously deform the reflection of reality. This might end in adopting policies that people don't really agree with, but feel pressured to," Dr. Bogdanov adds. "This technology could be further implemented in communical decision-making practices, guaranteeing an earnest gaze into what people's true opinions are."
The PRACTICE project was launched in 2013 and aims to build a secure cloud framework that allows for the realization of advanced and practical cryptographic technologies providing sophisticated security and privacy guarantees for all parties in cloudcomputing scenarios. The project has received funding from the EU's Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration.
Cybernetica is a R&D intensive ICT company that researches, develops and manufactures software solutions, light signalling and telematics products, maritime surveillance and radio communications systems.
Cybernetica has been an active counterpart in developing critical e-Governance systems, such as the Estonian X-Road, i-Voting, e-Customs and others.
Partisia is a Danish company with years of experience in developing and selling secure computation services.
Alexandra Institute is a Danish non-profit company that helps to deploy cutting-edge computer science research in real life products.
